Helsinki World Design Capital and Helsinki Region Welcome Weeks

If you come from outside of Helsinki, Finland, what will you expect from this city?

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is right in the middle of the Baltic Sea region, with easy access to East and West, and fast access to other European Union countries.

A great place to work and live, stable and safe, with very high standard of living and welfare, about quarter of Finnish population – about 1 million people – live in Helsinki region, which is the central to every sphere of Finnish society from public administration, to commerce, arts and sciences.

In 2012, Helsinki is chosen to be the World Design Capital. As a World Design Capital, Helsinki City has the opportunity to showcase accomplishments in design and urban policy. The benefits that Helsinki will have as a WDC include increasing Helsinki’s visibility as a centre of creativity and innovation, attracting investment and creative people, improving the quality of life in the city, position of the city as a leading centre of design etc.

To prepare for this important event, in 2011, Helsinki has been holding many minor events to attract more investment. One of the most outstanding events is the Helsinki Region Welcome Weeks.

There is a growing number of international and internationally – minded people in the Helsinki Area. The Welcome Weeks are here to bring the new and existing residents together. The purpose is to make new friends, increase know-how and have fun doing it.

During the Welcome Weeks, expats of all nationalities and their families are given information on living in Finland and are offered a chance to build their social networks through various activities offered alongside the more informational events.

The event is organized by Uusimaa Regional Council, the cities of Helsinki and Espoo, Helsinki Education and Research Area (HERA) and Opiskelijametropoli Student City – project in co-operation with Mundus Nicole Saari Ky, BBG.fi and Jolly Dragon.
